1. Open Settings → System → Activation.
2. Click Change product key.

Method 2 — by command line (when Settings misbehaves)

Open Command Prompt as administrator, then run:

slmgr /ato

1. Press Windows + R, type slui 4 and press Enter.
2. Choose your country and note the installation ID shown on screen.

Once Windows shows as activated, sign in with a Microsoft account (Settings → Accounts → Your info) and go back to Settings → System → Activation. If it says "activated with a digital license" rather than "linked to your Microsoft account", click Add an account. Reactivating Windows 11 after a hardware change

Swapping a hard drive, graphics card or RAM does not affect activation. Replacing the motherboard usually does, because the digital licence is tied to it. If Windows says it is not activated after a rebuild:

1. Go to Settings → System → Activation → Troubleshoot.
2. Click I changed hardware on this device recently and sign in with the Microsoft account you linked earlier.
3. Pick this PC from the list of devices, tick This is the device I'm using right now, and click Activate.

Your edition must match your key

A Windows 11 Home key activates Windows 11 Home; a Pro key activates Pro. Check which edition is installed under Settings → System → About → Windows specifications (or press Windows + R and type winver). Where to find your existing Windows 11 activation key

Fixing common activation errors

0xc004c003 — "the activation server determined the specified product key is blocked or in use"

Usually a mismatch between key edition and installed edition (a Pro key on a Home install, or vice versa). Check Settings → System → About for your edition; if it doesn't match your key, either install the matching edition or use the key to upgrade (Home → Pro works in place). 0x803f7001 — "Windows can't find a valid license"

Windows can't reach a license for this hardware. Enter your key manually via Method 1 or 2, and check you're online. On a new PC build this simply means no key has ever been entered.

0x4004f00c — can't reach the activation server

A connectivity error, not a key problem. Check your internet connection, disable VPN temporarily, and retry. Corporate networks sometimes block activation endpoints — try a home network or hotspot.

0xc004f050 — "the product key is invalid"

Almost always a typing error — Microsoft keys only use the characters B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, M, N, P, Q, R, T, V, W, X, Y and the digits 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, so if you have typed an O, I, 0, 1 or 5 the key has been misread — or a key for a different product, such as a Windows 10 or Windows Server key. After activation

What happens if I don't activate Windows 11?
