What you get

Why this edition costs $29.99 when Microsoft's retail Office is $149.99 and up

Professional Plus is a volume-licence edition. It is sold in bulk, delivered digitally, and activated with a Multiple Activation Key rather than through a Microsoft account, so there is no box, no shipping and no retail margin. The apps are the same Office 2024 apps; the differences are that it is Windows only, installs with Microsoft's Office Deployment Tool, and includes Access, which Microsoft's retail Home and Home & Business editions do not. Our Office 2024 editions guide compares all four editions. Every Office edition and version we sell is listed with prices on our Microsoft Office collection page.

How installation and activation work

1. Pay, and the email arrives with your key and the download link.
2. Uninstall any older Office first (Settings > Apps), then restart.
3. Run the installer. It is Microsoft's Office Deployment Tool with a configuration for Professional Plus 2024, and it downloads Office from Microsoft's servers (about 4 GB).
4. Open Word, go to File > Account > Activate Product, and enter the key. If online activation is blocked, phone activation takes about five minutes.

Office 2024 or Microsoft 365?

Choose Office 2024 if you want to pay once and mainly need the desktop apps on one to five PCs. Choose Microsoft 365 if you want 1 TB of OneDrive, Copilot and the apps on your phone, and are happy to pay $99.99 a year. Over five years a Microsoft 365 Personal subscription costs about $500; this licence costs $29.99. The lifetime licence vs Microsoft 365 comparison has the full table.
