Windows Server 2025: New Features, Requirements & ISO Download

Windows Server 2025 is Microsoft's current long-term servicing release, supported into 2034 — which makes it the default choice for new deployments. Here's what genuinely changed from Server 2022, the hardware it needs, and how to get the ISO and license it.

What's actually new

Hotpatching. The headline feature: security updates applied without rebooting, dramatically cutting maintenance windows. Baked into the OS, with orchestration available through Azure Arc as a subscription — for many admins this alone justifies the upgrade.

SMB over QUIC everywhere. Secure file access over the internet without a VPN, previously an Azure-edition exclusive, now available across editions — a quiet revolution for remote file shares.

Active Directory modernisation. The largest AD update in years: a new database page format for better scalability, LDAP over TLS improvements, and stronger default security for legacy protocols.

Storage and virtualization. Substantially faster NVMe I/O out of the box, GPU partitioning for sharing GPUs across VMs, and Hyper-V improvements inherited from Azure's hypervisor work.

Security hardening. Credential protections on by default, SMB signing enforced, delegated Managed Service Accounts — the secure-by-default posture 2022 started, finished.

System requirements

Formal minimums remain modest (64-bit 1.4 GHz CPU, 512 MB RAM — 2 GB with Desktop Experience, 32 GB disk), but realistic production baselines are what your workloads dictate. TPM 2.0 is recommended and required for some security features. Most hardware running Server 2019/2022 comfortably runs 2025.

Downloading the ISO

Get the official ISO free from the Microsoft Evaluation Center (microsoft.com/evalcenter) — it runs as a 180-day evaluation, identical binaries to the licensed product. Upgrade paths

In-place upgrades to 2025 are supported directly from Server 2022 and 2019 (and 2016 via a two-hop or clean install — see our end-of-life upgrade guide).
