Microsoft Office & 365 Product Keys Explained: Find Yours or Get a New One

Microsoft Office product keys confuse people because Microsoft has quietly changed how they work. Whether you're hunting for a key you already own or deciding which one to buy, here's the full picture in plain English.

How Office keys work now

An Office or Microsoft 365 product key is a 25-character code you redeem once, at setup.office.com, against a Microsoft account. From that moment the license lives in your account, not the key — reinstalling Office never requires the key again; you just sign in. This is why "finding your key" is often unnecessary: what you actually need is the right Microsoft account.

Finding a key or license you already own

Check your Microsoft account first. Sign in at account.microsoft.com → Services & subscriptions. Every Office license ever redeemed on that account is listed there, with an Install button. This solves the majority of "lost key" situations.

Check your purchase email. Digital keys arrive by email — search your inbox for "Office" or your seller's name. Nerdused customers: search "nerdused"; we can also re-send any key you've bought from us.

Preinstalled Office on a new PC? Look for an Office product key card in the box, or check whether the license is already attached to the Microsoft account used at first setup.

A note on key-finder tools: they can't recover modern Office keys — Office 2016 and later don't store the full key on the machine. If it's not in your account or your email, it's gone.

Which key should you buy for a new install?

Two very different products carry a "product key":

  • Perpetual Office (2021 / 2024) — one payment, yours for life on one machine. The best-value route for most people: a genuine Office 2021 or 2024 lifetime key costs a fraction of retail and never renews.
  • Microsoft 365 (Personal / Family) — a subscription key that adds 12 months of service, including 1 TB OneDrive and continuous updates, for up to six people on the Family plan. A Microsoft 365 key makes sense if you actually use the cloud extras — our full comparison covers the five-year math.

Mac user? The perpetual option is Office Home & Business for Mac.

Redeeming your key, step by step

  1. Go to setup.office.com and sign in (or create) a Microsoft account — use the account you'll keep long-term.
  2. Enter the 25-character key exactly as sent.
  3. Click Install and follow the download — full walkthrough in our Office 2024 download & install guide.

FAQ

Can one key activate two computers? Perpetual Office keys: one machine. Microsoft 365: install on multiple devices, signed in with your account.

My key says "already used" — what now? If you redeemed it before, sign in instead of re-entering it. If it was never redeemed, contact the seller — Nerdused replaces or refunds non-working keys under our 30-day guarantee.

Do Office keys expire? Unredeemed perpetual keys don't expire in practice; once redeemed, the license is permanent. Microsoft 365 keys add 12 months from redemption.
