Microsoft Office 2024 download: which file do I need?

There is no single "Office 2024" download on Microsoft's site. Which file you need depends on the edition on your key, because the retail editions and the volume-licence (LTSC) editions install differently:

Before you start

• Have your Standard 2024 key from the order email ready (25 characters, five groups). One key activates the number of PCs you bought (1, 3 or 5).
• If Outlook is set up in an older Office, note your email account details — the profile carries over, but it is worth having the password handy.
• Allow about 3 GB of download and 10–20 minutes per PC; the installer pulls the Office files from Microsoft, so a wired connection helps.
• Expect five apps afterwards: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote. Access is not part of Standard.

How to install Microsoft Office Standard 2024

Repeat these three steps on each PC: remove any older Office, run the installer, then enter your MAK key.

Step 1: Uninstall existing Microsoft Office (required)

Before installing Office Standard 2024, remove any previous versions to avoid conflicts.

1. Open the "Control Panel".
2. Select "Programs and Features".
3. Find Microsoft Office in the list, right-click, and select "Uninstall".
4. Follow the uninstallation wizard instructions.

Note: The process may take several minutes, depending on your computer's configuration.

Important: Restart your computer after uninstalling.

Step 2: Install Microsoft Office Standard 2024

After downloading the Office installer:

1. Go to your Downloads folder

2. Locate the installer file (Office_2024_EN_standard_64Bits.exe)

3. Right-click and select Run as administrator

4. Follow the on-screen instructions

5. Select the "Install" button. This operation will extract the application and proceed with the installation of your product.

Step 3: Activate Microsoft Office

Method 1: Online Activation

1. Open any Office app, and you will be prompted to enter the activation key when launching any application from the Microsoft Office suite; this will be the initial request you encounter.

No key prompt? Open Word, go to File → Account → Activate Product and enter your key. If Office is left unactivated, it shows an "Unlicensed Product" banner once the 30-day grace period runs out (see Common errors below).

Method 2: Phone activation (if online activation fails)

1. Open any Office app

2. Go to File -> Account

3. Click Activate Product

4. Select Enter Product Key

5. Enter your product key

6. Choose Phone Activation

7. Take note of the Installation ID

Complete Activation via Microsoft Portal

2. Click Let's Get Started

3. Sign in with Microsoft Account

4. Select Activate a Microsoft Product

5. Choose Microsoft Office and Windows OS

6. Enter Installation ID

Common errors and the fix for each

• 0xC004F074 ("The Key Management Server could not be contacted") — The volume build is looking for a KMS server because no key has been entered yet. Enter your MAK with cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:YOUR-KEY then cscript ospp.vbs /act from an administrator Command Prompt in the Office16 folder, or use File → Account → Activate Product.
• 0x8007007B ("The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect") — Same cause as 0xC004F074: activation is being attempted without a key. Install the key with ospp.vbs /inpkey and activate again.
• "Unlicensed Product" banner across the top of Word or Excel — Office installed but was never activated, or the 30-day grace period ran out. Go to File → Account → Activate Product and enter your key. If the key is rejected, send us the exact message shown.
• "We're sorry, Office can't install because another version of Office is already installed" — Click-to-Run refuses to install next to an existing Office or Microsoft 365 install. Remove the old version (Step 1 above, or Microsoft's Office uninstall support tool), restart, and try again.
• The download stalls or fails part-way through Step 2 — The Office files come from Microsoft's CDN, so a VPN, a strict firewall or a flaky Wi-Fi link can break the transfer. Disconnect the VPN, use a wired connection if you can, and run the installer again; it resumes from Microsoft rather than from our file.
• Only Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote appear after install — That is correct for Standard 2024 — Access is not part of this edition. If you need Access, the Professional Plus 2024 licence includes it.

Is this the same Microsoft Office 2024 download Microsoft provides?

Yes. The installer is Microsoft's own Office Deployment Tool with a configuration file; it downloads the Office LTSC 2024 build from Microsoft's servers, exactly as an IT department would deploy it. We publish the file sizes and SHA-256 checksums above so you can confirm the package is unchanged before you run it.

Do I need a Microsoft account to download or activate Office 2024 Standard?

No. Volume-licence editions activate with the MAK key against Microsoft's activation servers, not through a Microsoft account. You only sign in to a Microsoft account if you choose to, for example to use OneDrive in the apps.

Standard or Professional Plus — which do I need?

If you don't use Access (databases), Standard 2024 has everything else: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. Professional Plus adds Access. Nothing else differs — the same builds, the same support date.

Can I install Office Standard 2024 on a Mac?

No. The LTSC 2024 build is Windows-only. For macOS use Office 2024 Home & Business.

Can I download Office 2024 once and install it offline on other PCs?

Not with this package: it downloads from Microsoft each time it runs, so every PC needs an internet connection during Step 2 (about 3 GB each). Run the same installer on each PC covered by your 1-, 3- or 5-PC licence and enter the same key on each.

How long does the Microsoft Office 2024 download take?

The installer itself is 2.9 MB and arrives in seconds. The Office files are about 3 GB, so on a typical UK or US home broadband line Step 2 takes 10–20 minutes; slower connections take longer but the installer keeps going until it finishes.

Will it keep working after October 2029?

Yes — it keeps installing, activating and running. Microsoft simply stops shipping security updates for it after 9 October 2029, the same way Office 2019 stopped in October 2025.
