Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) costs $99.99 a year (or $9.99 a month) for Personal, $129.99 a year ($12.99 a month) for Family and $199.99 a year ($19.99 a month) for the Premium plan, according to Microsoft's US store in September 2026. Business plans run from $7.00 to $22.00 per user per month on a yearly contract. If you only need Word, Excel and PowerPoint, a one-time Office licence is usually cheaper after the first year.

Not sure whether one licence or a shared plan suits you? Our Microsoft 365 Family vs Personal comparison answers that; this page is the full price list.

Below you will find every current plan with its price, what the monthly-vs-yearly choice really costs, and the cheaper routes if the subscription price is putting you off. For the full list of apps in each plan, see our Microsoft 365 Personal breakdown.

Microsoft 365 subscription cost: monthly vs yearly

Paying monthly gives you flexibility, but it costs more over a year. The table shows what twelve monthly payments add up to against one yearly payment.

Plan 12 × monthly Yearly price You save by paying yearly
Personal $119.88 $99.99 $19.89
Family $155.88 $129.99 $25.89
Premium $239.88 $199.99 $39.89

Both options renew automatically until you cancel. Paying monthly is cheaper if you need Microsoft 365 for 10 months or less. On Personal, 10 × $9.99 = $99.90, just under the $99.99 yearly price. From month 11, the yearly plan wins on every plan. Our Microsoft 365 subscription guide explains how renewal, recurring billing and cancelling work.

Office 365 cost vs Microsoft 365: is it the same thing?

Yes, for home users. Microsoft renamed Office 365 Personal and Home to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family in 2020, so when people search for the Office 365 price today they are looking at the Microsoft 365 plans above. The "Office 365" name still exists in some enterprise plans (such as Office 365 E3), which are sold to organisations through Microsoft or a licensing partner.

Personal vs Family is the choice most households face. With two or more people using Office, Family works out cheaper per person. Our Microsoft 365 Family vs Personal comparison covers the sharing rules and per-person costs.

Microsoft Office cost without a subscription

If the yearly bill is the problem, a one-time licence is the main alternative. You pay once, keep the version you bought, and get security updates until Microsoft's support end date, which is 9 October 2029 for Office 2024. You do not get the 1 TB of OneDrive storage, Copilot or new features, and you choose whether to upgrade later.

Option Price at Nerdused today Paid Security updates until
Office Professional Plus 2024 (Windows) From $29.99 (1 PC) Once 9 October 2029
Office Standard 2024 (Windows) From $29.99 (1 PC) Once 9 October 2029
Office 365 Pro Plus account (PC, Mac, iOS, Android) $29.99 For 1 year Updated for as long as the account is active

Over five years, Microsoft 365 Personal costs $499.95 at today's yearly price, while a one-time Office 2024 licence costs $179.99 once from Microsoft, or from $29.99 at Nerdused. Our lifetime licence vs Microsoft 365 cost comparison runs the numbers over one, three and five years.

A cheaper Microsoft 365 alternative for one year

If you want the always-updated Microsoft 365 apps on a Mac, phone or tablet, the Office 365 Pro Plus 1-year account costs $29.99. It works differently from buying Microsoft 365 Personal yourself, so check these points first:

  • You receive a brand-new Microsoft 365 account with its own login. It is not added to your existing personal Microsoft account.
  • You can change the password, but not the email address on the account.
  • No product key is needed; the licence is already in the account. You sign in at office.com and install Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and the rest on up to five devices.
  • Files you save to that account's OneDrive belong to that account, so keep your own backups.

If you would rather own Office outright on a Windows PC, the 2024 one-time licences above are the better fit. Not sure which edition you need? Office 2024 editions explained compares all four, and the Microsoft Office collection lists every edition we sell.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Microsoft 365 per month?

Microsoft 365 Personal is $9.99 a month, Family is $12.99 a month, Premium is $19.99 a month and Basic is $1.99 a month in the US. Business plans are priced per user per month but billed on a yearly contract, from $7.00 (Business Basic) to $22.00 (Business Premium).

Is Microsoft 365 a one-time purchase?

No. Every Microsoft 365 plan is a subscription that renews monthly or yearly. If you want to pay once, buy a one-time edition such as Office Home 2024 or Office Professional Plus 2024 instead.

What is the cheapest way to get Microsoft 365?

Microsoft 365 Basic at $19.99 a year is the cheapest plan, but it only includes web and mobile apps plus 100 GB of storage. For full desktop apps, Family is the cheapest per person if you share it: about $21.67 a year each across six people. For one person, a one-time Office 2024 licence from Nerdused (from $29.99) costs less than a year of Personal, and Office Home 2024 from Microsoft ($179.99) costs less than two years.

How much does Microsoft 365 cost for a business?

Business Basic is $7.00, Apps for business $10.00, Business Standard $14.00 and Business Premium $22.00 per user per month, all paid yearly. Only Apps for business, Standard and Premium include the desktop Office apps.

Does the Microsoft 365 price include Copilot?

Personal, Family and Premium include Copilot in the Office apps, with Premium having the highest usage limits. On Family, only the subscription owner gets Copilot. Business Standard and Premium need the "with Copilot" version, at $23.50 and $32.00 per user per month.

What happens if I stop paying for Microsoft 365?

According to Microsoft Support, you can still open, view and usually print documents, but you cannot create, edit or save them until you renew. Your OneDrive quota falls back to the free 5 GB, so move large files off first.

Is Office 365 cheaper than Microsoft 365?

For home users they are the same product; Office 365 Personal and Home became Microsoft 365 Personal and Family in 2020. Any "Office 365" plan sold to consumers today is priced as the Microsoft 365 plan it became.
