How to Install and Activate Office 2024 (Windows & Mac)

Bought Office 2024 — or about to — and need to get it installed and activated? This guide covers the full setup on both Windows and Mac, plus fixes for the activation errors that trip people up most often. Ten minutes start to finish.

Before you start

Uninstall any older Office version first (Settings → Apps), then restart. Skipping this causes most install failures. You won't lose any documents — you're only removing the program.

Step 1 — Get the installer from Microsoft

Always get the installer from Microsoft directly — never from third-party download portals, which bundle unwanted software.

1. Go to setup.office.com (or office.com/setup) and sign in with a Microsoft account. A free account is fine — create one if needed.
2. Enter your 25-character product key when prompted. The key links Office 2024 to your Microsoft account permanently — useful if you ever reinstall.
3. Click Install Office. The installer (OfficeSetup.exe on Windows, a .pkg on Mac) downloads.

Step 2 — Install on Windows

1. Run OfficeSetup.exe. Installation is automatic and takes 5–10 minutes depending on your connection.
2. When it finishes, open any app — Word is the usual choice.
3. If prompted, sign in with the same Microsoft account from Step 1. Office activates automatically because the key is attached to your account.
4. Verify under File → Account: you should see "Product Activated — Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2024".

Step 2 (alternative) — Install on Mac

1. Open the downloaded .pkg file and follow the installer.
2. Launch Word, sign in with your Microsoft account, and activation completes automatically.

Note: the perpetual Mac edition is Office Home & Business 2024 for Mac — Professional Plus is Windows-only.

Step 3 — Activate manually if you weren't prompted

If Office never asked for your key, open Word, go to File → Account → Activate Product, choose Enter Product Key, and type your 25-character key. Without this, Office reverts to a trial after 30 days.

Fixing common activation and install errors

"This product key has already been used." If you've previously redeemed the key yourself, just sign in — no re-entry needed; Office is tied to your account. If you've never used the key and see this, contact your seller. Nerdused keys are covered by a 30-day replace-or-refund guarantee.

Error 30015 or 30182 during install. Usually a conflict with an older Office version or antivirus interference. Uninstall previous Office versions via Settings → Apps, temporarily pause antivirus, and re-run the installer.

Installer stuck at 0%. Check your connection isn't metered and retry; the Office installer streams during install rather than downloading fully first.

Activation still failing? Use phone activation: File → Account → Activate Product → Enter Product Key → Phone Activation, note the Installation ID, then complete it at visualsupport.microsoft.com to get a Confirmation ID.
