A Windows 11 activation key is the 25-character product key (XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX) that proves your copy of Windows is genuine and switches off the "Activate Windows" watermark. Activating Windows 11 takes about two minutes when you have a genuine product key: Settings → System → Activation → Change product key, enter the key, click Activate. Here's the exact process, what a Windows 11 activation key costs and where to get one, how digital licences differ from keys, why "free" keys don't work, and fixes for the errors that occasionally appear.
What is a Windows 11 activation key (and how is it different from a digital licence)?
Microsoft activates Windows 11 in one of two ways. A product key is a 25-character code you type in; you get one when you buy Windows as a retail or OEM licence, and it is what Nerdused sends you by email. A digital licence (Microsoft also calls it a digital entitlement) is an activation record stored on Microsoft's servers against your PC's hardware; you get one when a PC ships with Windows pre-installed, when you upgraded for free from Windows 10, or after you activate with a key once. In practice: you use the key the first time, and Windows turns it into a digital licence for that machine so you rarely need to type it again.
| How you got Windows 11 | Activation method |
| Bought a product key from Nerdused or another retailer | Product key (enter it once; a digital licence is then created for the PC) |
| New PC with Windows 11 pre-installed | Digital licence, stored in the PC's firmware; activates automatically |
| Free upgrade from an activated Windows 10 | Digital licence, linked to the hardware |
| Bought from the Microsoft Store app | Digital licence tied to your Microsoft account |
| Volume licence from work or school | KMS or MAK key issued by your IT department |
| Home to Pro upgrade | Enter a Pro product key under Change product key; no reinstall |
Check whether Windows 11 is already activated
Open Settings → System → Activation. The line under "Activation state" tells you where you stand:
| Message | Meaning |
| Windows is activated | Activated with a product key |
| Windows is activated with a digital license | Activated; the licence is tied to this PC's hardware |
| Windows is not activated | No valid key or licence found; enter a key using the steps below |
You can also check from the command line: open Command Prompt and run slmgr /xpr to see whether activation is permanent or has an expiry date.
Method 1 — through Settings (the normal way)
- Open Settings → System → Activation.
- Click Change product key.
- Enter your 25-character key (XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX) and click Next → Activate.
- Windows contacts Microsoft's servers; within seconds you'll see "Windows is activated".
Method 2 — by command line (when Settings misbehaves)
Open Command Prompt as administrator, then run:
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
slmgr /ato
The first command installs the key; the second forces online activation.
Method 3 — activate by phone (no internet, or online activation refused)
- Press Windows + R, type
slui 4and press Enter. - Choose your country and note the installation ID shown on screen.
- Call the toll-free number displayed (or use the Microsoft activation web page it points to), read the installation ID, and type the confirmation ID you are given.
- Click Activate Windows.
Phone activation uses the same key; it just lets Microsoft's automated system confirm it when the online route has been blocked by a network or a temporary server fault.
Reactivating Windows 11 after a hardware change
Swapping a hard drive, graphics card or RAM does not affect activation. Replacing the motherboard usually does, because the digital licence is tied to it. If Windows says it is not activated after a rebuild, enter your product key again with Method 1, or use Method 3 (phone activation) if online activation is refused. If Microsoft's server still rejects it, contact the seller with your order details. Bear in mind that an OEM licence that came pre-installed on a PC is tied to that PC's original motherboard, and every Windows licence covers one PC. Our guide to OEM vs retail Windows keys explains the difference.
Your edition must match your key
A Windows 11 Home key activates Windows 11 Home; a Pro key activates Pro. Check which edition is installed under Settings → System → About → Windows specifications (or press Windows + R and type winver). If you installed Home and bought a Pro key, you do not need to reinstall: entering the Pro key under Change product key upgrades the edition in place — see how to upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro. The reverse (a Home key on a Pro install) is not possible without reinstalling, which is one reason to buy Pro when it costs the same. Not sure which you need? Read Windows 11 Home vs Pro.
| Your situation | Which Windows 11 activation key you need |
| New build or fresh install, no Pro-only needs | Home or Pro; at Nerdused both are $29.99 for one PC, so Pro keeps your options open |
| Home is installed and you want BitLocker, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V or domain join | A Pro key, entered under Change product key (in-place upgrade, no reinstall) |
| Pro is installed and you own a Home key | Won't work; reinstall Home, or buy a Pro key |
| Setting up several PCs | One key per PC, or the 3- or 5-PC option |
How much does a Windows 11 activation key cost, and where should you buy one?
Microsoft's own store charges $139.99 for Windows 11 Home and $199.99 for Windows 11 Pro. Grey-market key sites list keys from around $17 to $35 with no guarantee of where they came from, and "free Windows 11 keys" published on blogs are either generic installation keys (they let you install, not activate) or KMS client keys meant for corporate servers — neither will activate a home PC, and KMS "activators" are a common source of malware. Nerdused sells genuine Windows 11 Pro and Windows 11 Home product keys for $29.99 for one PC, with 3- and 5-PC options, delivered by email in about 60 seconds. Every key activates against Microsoft's own servers using the steps above, and if it won't, you get a replacement or a full refund within 30 days.
| Source | Windows 11 Home | Windows 11 Pro | Guarantee |
| Microsoft Store | $139.99 | $199.99 | Microsoft |
| Nerdused (1 PC) | $29.99 | $29.99 | Activates or refunded within 30 days; same-day support |
| Grey-market key marketplaces | ~$17–$35 | ~$17–$35 | Varies by seller |
| "Free" keys and KMS activators | $0 | $0 | None — do not activate, and activators often carry malware |

Free Windows 11 activation keys, generic keys and KMS activators: what actually works
Search for a Windows 11 activation key and you will find long lists of "free" keys. They fall into three groups, and none of them gives a home PC a permanent, genuine activation.
- Generic installation keys let setup install a particular edition. They do not activate Windows, so you end up with the same "Activate Windows" watermark.
- KMS client keys are meant for organisations that run their own activation server. Without that server they cannot activate your PC, and a KMS activation has to renew roughly every 180 days.
- Activators and scripts from forums and file-sharing sites bypass Microsoft's licensing. They are a common way for malware to get onto a PC, and they leave you without a licence you can prove.
The routes that do work without paying for a new key are the ones in the table at the top: a digital licence that came with the PC, or a free upgrade from an activated Windows 10. If you have neither, a genuine key is the safe fix. We cover the free-key question in more detail in how to get a Windows 11 Pro activation key for free, and the difference between key types in OEM vs retail Windows keys.
Where to find your existing Windows 11 activation key
If Windows came pre-installed, the key is embedded in the PC's firmware and you can read it from an admin PowerShell window with (Get-CimInstance -ClassName SoftwareLicensingService).OA3xOriginalProductKey. A retail box has the key on a card inside; a digital purchase has it in the confirmation email or the retailer's account page — for Nerdused orders, that is the delivery email and your order history. Free upgrades and Microsoft Store purchases have no key to find; they use a digital licence linked to your account. Every method, including PowerShell and reading the key from an old drive, is in how to find your Windows product key.
Fixing common activation errors
0xc004c003 — "the activation server determined the specified product key is blocked or in use"
Usually a mismatch between key edition and installed edition (a Pro key on a Home install, or vice versa). Check Settings → System → About for your edition; if it doesn't match your key, either install the matching edition or use the key to upgrade (Home → Pro works in place). If editions match and the error persists, run slmgr /ato from an admin prompt — transient server errors clear on retry. Full walkthrough: fixing error 0xc004c003. Bought the key from us and still stuck? Contact support; we'll verify the key and replace it immediately if it's faulty.
0x803f7001 — "Windows can't find a valid license"
Windows can't reach a license for this hardware. Enter your key manually via Method 1 or 2, and check you're online. On a new PC build this simply means no key has ever been entered.
0x4004f00c — can't reach the activation server
A connectivity error, not a key problem. Check your internet connection, disable VPN temporarily, and retry. Corporate networks sometimes block activation endpoints — try a home network or hotspot.
0xc004f050 — "the product key is invalid"
Almost always a typing error — Microsoft keys only use the characters B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, M, N, P, Q, R, T, V, W, X, Y and the digits 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, so if you have typed an O, I, 0, 1 or 5 the key has been misread — or a key for a different product, such as a Windows 10 or Windows Server key. Re-enter it carefully, and check the edition. If it still fails, try Method 3 (phone activation), which reports a clearer reason.
Windows 11 activation key not working: a quick checklist
- Re-type the key slowly, using only the characters listed above.
- Check the installed edition matches the key (Home key for Home, Pro key for Pro).
- Confirm you are online and turn off any VPN.
- Run
slmgr /atofrom an administrator Command Prompt to retry activation. - Try phone activation (Method 3), which gives a clearer reason if Microsoft refuses the key.
- Contact the seller with your order details. For Nerdused orders, support will verify the key and replace it or refund you within 30 days.
After activation
Your license ties to the machine. Reinstalling Windows on the same hardware re-activates automatically — you won't need the key again. Major hardware changes (a new motherboard) may require re-entering it.
FAQs
What happens if I don't activate Windows 11?
Windows keeps working, but you get a permanent "Activate Windows" watermark in the corner of the screen, Personalisation settings (wallpaper, themes, colours, lock screen) are locked, and Settings nags you to activate. Security updates still install. Microsoft's licence terms expect a valid licence for ongoing use, so treat an unactivated install as temporary.
Can I activate Windows 11 without a product key?
Only if the PC already has a digital licence, for example because it shipped with Windows 11 or was upgraded for free from an activated Windows 10. In that case Windows activates itself once it is online. Otherwise you can install and use Windows 11 unactivated, with the limits above, but only a genuine key or digital licence activates it.
Is a Windows 11 product key the same as an activation key?
Yes. People use "product key", "activation key", "licence key" and "CD key" for the same 25-character code. The key is what you enter; activation is the step where Microsoft's servers accept it.
Can I use one Windows 11 activation key on two PCs?
No. One key activates one PC. If you need Windows on several computers, buy the 3- or 5-PC option — our Windows 11 Pro listing has all three options — rather than reusing a single key, which will fail to activate on the second machine.
Does a Windows 11 activation key expire?
No. A genuine retail or OEM key is a lifetime licence for the PC it activates. There is no renewal and no subscription; only volume KMS activations expire, every 180 days, and they are not sold to individuals.
Can I activate Windows 11 with a Windows 10 key?
Yes, in most cases. A genuine Windows 10 Home key activates Windows 11 Home and a Windows 10 Pro key activates Windows 11 Pro, because Microsoft's free upgrade path still recognises them. Enter it exactly as you would a Windows 11 key.
Is it safe to buy a cheap Windows 11 key?
It depends on the seller. A genuine key from a retailer with a refund policy activates directly against Microsoft's servers, which is the only test that matters. Keys from anonymous marketplace sellers can be volume keys that get revoked, or keys already used elsewhere. Nerdused keys are covered by a 30-day activation guarantee.
Do I need the key again after reinstalling Windows 11?
Not on the same PC. Choose I don't have a product key during setup, pick the same edition, and Windows activates automatically from the digital licence once it is online. If you are installing from scratch, our Windows 11 bootable USB guide covers making the installer.
How do I check whether my activation key is genuine?
Enter it. Microsoft's activation server accepts genuine keys and rejects blocked, counterfeit or already-used ones with an error code. There is no offline checker that can tell you more than the activation server does.
