Step 1 — Choose your edition first

Which download you want depends on what the server is for:

Step 2 — Download SQL Server 2025

  2. Choose Download Media in the installer if you want a full ISO for offline or multi-server installs (roughly 1.5–2 GB).

Step 3 — Install

  1. Run setup and choose New SQL Server standalone installation.
  2. Select the features you need — for most servers that's the Database Engine Services; skip what you won't use (each feature adds patching surface).
  3. Set the instance name (default MSSQLSERVER is fine for a single instance).
  4. Use Mixed Mode authentication only if an application requires it; Windows Authentication is the secure default.
  5. Install SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) separately — it's a free download and no longer bundled.
