Windows Server 2025 — How to Download, Install & Activate

This guide walks you through getting Windows Server 2025 running from nothing: downloading the official ISO, choosing between Standard and Datacenter, installing on hardware or a VM, and activating with a genuine licence key. Total time for a clean install: roughly 30–45 minutes.

Step 1 — Download the Windows Server 2025 ISO

Microsoft distributes the Windows Server 2025 ISO through its Evaluation Center — a free 180-day trial that converts to a full installation once you enter a licence key, with no reinstall needed.

  1. Go to Microsoft's Evaluation Center and choose Windows Server 2025.
  2. Register (name and email) and select the 64-bit ISO download — around 5–6 GB.
  3. Either write it to a USB stick with Rufus (8 GB minimum) for a bare-metal install, or mount the ISO directly if you're installing into a hypervisor like Hyper-V, Proxmox or VMware.

Step 2 — Choose your edition: Standard vs Datacenter

Windows Server 2025 Standard ($49.99) covers the overwhelming majority of deployments: it licenses two virtual machines plus the physical host and includes every core Server 2025 feature — Active Directory, Hyper-V, the new hotpatching support, and SMB over QUIC.

Windows Server 2025 Datacenter ($49.99) is for heavy virtualisation: unlimited VMs, Storage Spaces Direct, and software-defined networking.

If you're running more than a handful of VMs on one host, Datacenter pays for itself; otherwise pick Standard. Setting up Remote Desktop? The Standard + 50 RDS User CALs bundle ($379.99) covers the server licence and client access in one purchase.

Step 3 — Install

  1. Boot from your USB stick (or attach the ISO to a new VM) and start setup.
  2. Choose your edition and select Desktop Experience unless you specifically want the command-line-only Server Core.
  3. Select Custom install, choose the target drive, and let setup partition it.
  4. On first boot, set the Administrator password.
  5. Run sconfig or Server Manager to set the hostname, network configuration, and enable Remote Desktop if needed.

Step 4 — Activate with your licence key

Once installed, activate from an elevated PowerShell:

slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
slmgr /ato

— or via Settings → Activation. Your key from Nerdused arrives by email in about 60 seconds with these instructions included. The licence is perpetual: no renewal, no subscription. If you're running Remote Desktop Services, you'll also need RDS CALs — one per connecting user or device.

Frequently asked questions

Is the trial ISO the same as the full version?

Yes — entering a licence key converts the evaluation to a full installation; no reinstall needed.

How many cores does the licence cover?

Our Standard and Datacenter licences cover a 24-core server — enough for the vast majority of hardware. Check your CPU core count before buying.

Do I need CALs?

For Remote Desktop user or device connections, yes — we sell 50-packs and bundles that include them.

Can I upgrade from Server 2022?

In-place upgrade is supported; for production servers a clean install is still the safer route.

Is this licence genuine?

Yes — authorised distribution, permanent activation against Microsoft's servers, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
