Office 2024 for Mac: Home or Home & Business?

Office 2024 for Mac comes in two editions, and Microsoft describes each as a “one-time purchase for 1 PC or Mac”. Both install the classic 2024 desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Home & Business adds two things: Outlook, and the right to use the suite for work. Microsoft labels Home 2024 “for non-commercial use” and Home & Business “for use at home or work”.

You may not need Home & Business for email alone. Outlook for Mac is a free download from the Mac App Store, and Microsoft says it is free to use with Outlook.com, Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo and IMAP accounts. Choose Home & Business if you run a business on your Mac. Our Office 2024 editions guide compares the Mac editions with the Windows-only ones.

Is there a Microsoft Office for Mac lifetime licence?

Yes. A Microsoft Office for Mac lifetime licence is the one-time purchase described above: you pay once, there is nothing to renew, and the licence has no expiry date. Two limits apply. Each licence covers one Mac, and Microsoft supports each version only until a fixed date:

  • Office 2024 for Mac: supported until 9 October 2029.
  • Office 2021 for Mac: end of support is 13 October 2026.
  • Office 2019 for Mac: support ended on 10 October 2023.
  • Office 2016 for Mac: support ended on 13 October 2020.

After that date the apps still open, but Microsoft stops issuing security fixes. One-time purchases also have no upgrade option, so the next version is a new purchase at full price. That is why Office Home & Business 2021 for Mac is the lowest-priced one-time licence in the table: it still works, but its end-of-support date is 13 October 2026, after which Microsoft issues no security fixes. For a new install we recommend Office 2024. Our Office 2021 end of life guide explains what stops.

One-time purchase or Microsoft 365 on a Mac: which costs less?

The one-time purchase costs less if you keep it for two years or more. Two years of Microsoft 365 Personal come to $199.98, already more than Office Home 2024 at $179.99. Over five years the subscription costs $499.95.

The subscription earns its price in three cases: you use Office on a Mac, an iPad and a phone at the same time, you want 1 TB of OneDrive storage and Copilot, or you share with family. Microsoft 365 Family covers up to six people for $129.99 a year. Our lifetime licence vs Microsoft 365 comparison runs the numbers in full.

How to download Microsoft Office for Mac after you buy

You download Microsoft Office for Mac from Microsoft, not from the seller. With an Office 2024 or 2021 product key, the steps are:

  1. Go to microsoft365.com/setup and sign in with a Microsoft account, or create one.
  2. Enter your product key. This adds the Office licence to your account, and you only do it once.
  3. Select Install apps. The installer downloads to your Downloads folder as a .pkg file.
  4. Open the .pkg file, follow the installer and enter your Mac password when asked.
  5. Open Word from your Applications folder and select Get Started to activate.

Microsoft's own install instructions cover each screen, and our guide to installing and activating Office 2024 lists fixes for common errors.

What you cannot run on a Mac

Microsoft states that Access is not available for Mac. Office Standard 2024 and Office Professional Plus 2024 are Windows-only editions, so those keys do not activate on macOS. If you need a Windows-only app, our guide to running Windows on a Mac covers Parallels and the Windows licence you would need.
