Windows Server 2022 ISO Download Guide (and How to License It Properly)

The Windows Server 2022 ISO is a free download from Microsoft — what costs money is the license that turns it into a production server. Here's the official download route, how to convert the 180-day evaluation into a fully licensed install without reinstalling, and how to pick the right edition.

Step 1 — Download the official ISO

Get the ISO from the Microsoft Evaluation Center (microsoft.com/evalcenter): choose Windows Server 2022, register the short form, and download the 64-bit ISO (~5 GB). This is the full product — the same binaries as the licensed version — running as a 180-day evaluation until you add a key. Avoid third-party ISO mirrors: checksums matter on server installs.

Step 2 — Install

  1. Write the ISO to a USB (Rufus or similar) or mount it in your hypervisor.
  2. During setup, choose your edition and experience: Standard (Desktop Experience) is the common pick; Core — no GUI — for hardened, script-managed deployments.
  3. Complete setup; the server runs as an evaluation with a countdown visible on the desktop watermark.

Step 3 — Convert the evaluation to a fully licensed server (no reinstall)

This is the step most guides skip. With a genuine key, convert in place from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM /Online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula

(Use ServerDatacenter for Datacenter keys. Check the current edition first with DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEdition.) The server reboots twice and comes back permanently licensed — workloads, roles and data intact. Which edition do you need?

Is the evaluation different from the full version? No — identical binaries. The key is the only difference, which is why in-place conversion works.

Can I convert after the 180 days expire? Yes — the server starts shutting down hourly, but the DISM conversion still works and stops it.
